The annual Willard Katsande under 18 National Soccer Cup roars to life this weekend from the 11th – 12th June 2016 in Sakubva,Mutare, with 16 teams vying for top honors in the National tournament.
The tournament is bankrolled by national soccer team and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder, Sakubva born Willard Katsande. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Kumakomo Community Radio Station, Katsande said the tournament will afford a number of youths an opportunity to showcase their talents.
“ This year we have invited provincial teams and it is my hope that this year’s tournament, like the ones before will also afford many youngsters an opportunity to showcase their talents . I call upon a number of soccer agents in the country to scout for talented players from this tournament,” said the soft spoken Katsande.
The local organizing committee is working around the clock to ensure that all goes on well come June the 11th. At the time of going to the print, six provinces had already affiliated, with the local teams make up for the other slots.
The tournament comes a week after the national soccer team qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament set for Gabon in early 2017. Katsande becomes only the second captain to lead a third successful bid for Afcon qualification for the Zimbabwean warriors in as many attempts.
Asked to comment on the recent qualification, Katsande said, “ It was an incredible win, the atmosphere was fantastic, and also with the quality we had in our team, we deserved that win. And we will now focus on the tournament in Gabon.”
Willard Katsande who is also a brand ambassador for Kumakomo Community Radio, hails from Sakubva, and has been sponsoring the tournament for the past three years. He is currently contracted to South African giants Kaizer Chiefs and finished the last season as the teams player of the season.
