13th February of every year is a day set aside by UNESCO as a day we celebrate radio. This day we celebrate the role radio plays in our communities and this year the theme is Radio in the time of disaster and emergencies.
Such a theme comes at a time when the El Nino effect affected the rain season resulting in a serious drought that has left thousands of Zimbabwean in need of food aid.
As Kumakomo Community radio we joined the world to celebrate this special day with a March. The community of Mutare including some partners of Kumakomo Community radio converged at Meikles park where the March started through main street to Carvery where drama and other forms of entertainment to mark World radio day were done.
Legal resources foundation representative Mrs Nyamaropa gave a speech on the importance of radio and how community radio in Mutare has helped in having programmes that they do reach communities even deep in rural areas. A representative of the Federation for the disabled person in Zimbabwe Mr Wallace Mupfumwa also welcomed the coming of Kumakomo using alternative platforms of broadcasting. Speaker after speaker said it was their hope that Government licenses community radios as they are a tool for development.
