Zimbabwe Association of Community Radio Stations (ZACRAS) wishes to congratulate you Hon. Monica Mutsvangwa on your appointment as minister responsible for information, publicity and broadcasting services portfolio. As we welcome your appointment and congratulate you, we look forward to a better media sector which serves the community of Zimbabwe well complimenting the “Zimbabwe is Open for Business” philosophy which the new dispensation led by His Excellency President Emerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa adopted recently. As community broadcasters, we wish to enjoin the government efforts in developing our country playing our role of promoting access to information to all citizens including those in rural communities.
Zacras, a grouping of Zimbabwean potential community broadcasters intending to serve various communities in Zimbabwe once granted with broadcasting licenses, is a non-profit organisation seeking to promote community radio interests in Zimbabwe. We have a membership of 28 community radio initiatives waiting for licensing since close to two decades ago when the broadcasting services act was promulgated. As we congratulate you madam, we wish to draw your attention to the fact that our situation calls for your immediate attention to ensure that community radios are licenced and operate in a conducive environment with government support as is the case in other countries. The fact that Zimbabwe remains one of only two countries in the region together with Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) without licensed community radios serves to demonstrate that our media sector still require some reforms.
We therefore call upon your office to attend to this matter urgently as we feel it plays a very strategic role to development. If these community radio initiatives were licensed they would be contributing to the addressing of disasters like cholera outbreak through information dissemination.
We look forward to your intervention on this matter as we congratulate you.
Congratulations, makorokoto, amhlophe!!!!!.
